Playing Catch Up

September 17th, 2011

picture of my display at the summer feteThe fete went very well, by the way. It was a scorching day (thank god for the gazebo I borrowed from a neighbour) I sold some magnets – to some very enthusiastic buyers – and great feedback too. It was all encouraging stuff. I’m planning to book a table at the Christmas Fair, but I’m refusing to think about that until late October at the earliest. (Have you seen all the Christmassy things in she supermarkets already? Crazy!)

Other activity on Planet Aspie includes the usual school-holiday mania, and back-to-school-itis, and I’ve updated the website with new photos taken over the summer. Let me know what you think :o) More later, when I’ve finished playing catch-up.

Packages in the Post

June 23rd, 2011

You know when the package you’ve been expecting is lying behind the door when you get home, and you have a “YEY!” moment? The arrival of ten fridge-magnet blanks mightn’t sound like much to get excited about, but they meant I could make these, and I’m as pleased as punch with (and a tinsy bit proud of) the results! ->>

Now comes the scary bit. I have to stand behind a table at the school fete (for which privilege I must pay £15), and convince people their fridges will look barren without one (or many) of my magnets. Any tips for selling? Anyone?

At £2.99 each, I’ll only have to sell fifteen of them to cover the costs, and make the humiliation of being there worthwhile. But… I have images of me standing there, while all the school mums walk past with compassionate glances, grasping their children’s hands, and muttering, “we don’t need any of those, sweetheart.” I’m breaking into a sweat at the thought of it. Any tips for not-looking-like-a-complete-muppet? Arrrghhh!

It’s not that I mind looking like a muppet. Anyone on my school run will tell you about my collection of hats, or my propensity to wear boots whatever the weather, it’s just that I care about this project. I don’t care if they think I’m a prat, but I want them to like my photos.

I can’t back out now (unless it rains) – the table’s booked. I know the kids will spend any profit I do make on ice cream, and the coconut shy (and they don’t even like coconuts), but I also know I have to try. Besides, I’m expecting another 50 magnet blanks to be lying behind the door any day now…
Anyone got any tips for a rain-dance?

Touchdown

June 6th, 2011

Hello! Welcome to Planet Aspie’s shiny new blog.

I’m Leonie, a middle-aged, married mother, and an aspie*.

I was diagnosed with Asperger’s only last year, and, after a lifetime trying to fit with normality, it’s taken a while to settle into my new surroundings. I’m more relaxed than I was, and have started to peek out from under the duvet now. I find I like being in a place where other people want the music turned down too, and it’s refreshing that no one here cares what I wear, or whether I brushed my hair this morning (I didn’t).

So far, I have dealt with my diagnosis by a) working too hard, b) letting the housework go to ruin, and c) throwing myself into a new project: the Planet Aspie images. (I also did a bit of raging at life, but that didn’t last long.)

I’ve loved photography since I had my first camera as a child; my inquisitiveness was amply satisfied by learning about aperture and exposure, and all the other things you had to understand in those days. Photography also gave me a different way to communicate, and it still does.

So please come and take a look at life from my perspective, and let me know what you think :o)

*I have Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism that affects my ability to understand how people interact.
 There’s more about it here.
